21. Text Deconstruction

Hall Of Fame - The Script feat. Will.I.Am

I have decided to deconstruct this video to gain ideas for my own video as I aim to base mine on the idea of this. I shall deconstruct it by analysing the mis-en-scene, editing, sound and camera shots/movement and composition. I will then take this and try and include it into my own video. I like the style of this video and how it contrasts with the song, with the 'fighter' style of attitude. It shows key elements such as passion which I love to see. The video shows the struggle of two people from two different classes and places and how they fight to gain what they want to become so even though they're far apart socially they're close in their purpose.

Camera Shots/Movement/Composition

Close Up
There are many close ups at the beginning of the video showing the two separate people in their lives. They're extreme close ups to show that they're the main people the videos based on throughout. This is not only in the narrative part of the video, but the performance part as well. There are numerous close ups of the artists to show the audience who they are. Close ups are also used when key elements are portrayed in the video, for example, when the boxer hits the other guy in the face, showing he's achieved what he wanted too and become the best. Secondly, when the main guy is pretending to hit the camera, coming from a birds eye angle showing the dominance he has and how far he has come.
There is also a close up when it zooms in on the girls hearing aid so it dominates the screen, this is to emphasise the fact she's deaf and can't hear the music, she has to feel it. This co-insides with what the band wanted to create, music you could feel.

Establishing Shot
Establishing shots are often used at the start of a video to establish the relation between the setting and characters. There are two vital establishing shots at the beginning that show the difference between the two characters, including their wealth, class and standard of living. For example, in the first shot, it shows the lower class family and a zoom establishes the cigarette on the table, where as the other family is 'picture' perfect with breakfast, and a laptop on the table. The setting is far more colourful than the first one, showing the different classes.

Low Angle
Both characters have their dreams and these are shown by the regular cuts to them when you see them training. In the shots showing this, there are regularly low angles shown. This is to show them as dominating and on top compared to the people that are trying to stop them achieving and showing that they've made it. For example, when the girl is leaping in the air, a low angle is used to show her dominating and the same again when the boy is hitting the punch bag.

Pan
A pan is used when the boy finally wins and achieves his dream. A low angle is used to show him dominating and showing how far he has become as he looks stronger as a person, mentally and physically. The camera pans across, showing authority and superiority to the people that beat him up at the beginning of the video.

Head On Shot
Head on shots are used throughout this video when The Script come towards the camera, it gives a sense of performance and how they want to create a relationship with the audience and fans watching it, showing their passion, adding to the passion from the song. It's to create the feeling that the band are singing at you, directing you, to bring you in as viewers personally, to enable you can relate to the song and your own experiences.

Zoom/Reverse Zoom
Zoom is used at various points throughout the video to exaggerate, for example at the beginning, the hearing aid to establish the character automatically. It also zooms when she can't 'feel' the music,  so she touches the speaker. This is because once again it shows her character and what she goes through and how it is a vital part of the video.

Sound
Due to the video being a music video, the main sound is the sound from the song. However, this video breaks a few conventions as it includes different types of sound along with this.  For example, there are sirens used and dogs barking. However, it is hard to establish what is non-diegetic and diegetic sound. This is because, the band are not playing, they are miming and lip syncing has been used, so is this the non or diegetic sound? It confuses the audience because of the terms. However, these sounds have been used to continue to show the difference between the two settings and situations. Some videos don't tend to have any other additional sounds other than the music itself. There is also diegetic dialogue used to once again help establish the characters and the way their lives are and the way they're treated. One gets 'barked' out and spoken too with little respect where as the upper class girl gets woken up with a 'morning beautiful'. Although, subtitles are also used to once again show to the audience that the girl is deaf as it's a main point in the video. Lip syncing is used as the band are miming, this is to make them look as if they're actually performing it there and then to establish their relationship with the audience and to create a good performance purpose.

Mis-En-Scene
The mis-en-scene is vital in this video because it helps the audience to establish the differences between the two characters. For example, the first place shown is in an urban area, thats run down. It also shows the bed on the floor, showing possibly the lack of money they have and how they're lower class. The colour in the house is also dingy, and boring colours that are simple and represent the way they live their lives and their social class. The lighting also creates this as there is very little lighting used, showing it naturally and to continue with the fact of the lower class. Where as, the other character's house is shown in the totally opposite aspect with lighting used and bright colours to show the value of it more, and the fact that they're upper class. The clothes the boy is wearing also represents this class, as he wears grey which shows a depression aspect, representative of his life again.

When the video cuts to the performance aspect of the video, the mis-en-scene is very basic. For example, it looks like they're in a warehouse, simple and dark with no natural light, although they have artificial lights, they are not very dominant in the video. This is to reinforce the song and the type of song it is, so people pay attention to the band and what the song is trying to say due to there not being a lot for them to see in this aspect other than that. It also means the audience are more than likely to pay more attention to the narrative aspect of the video, which in this case is the more important aspect as it relates to the lyrics of the song in some ways.
