14. Narrative Structure

Narrative Structure

The Script  feat. Will.I.Am - Hall Of Fame
The narrative structure shown in this video is linear structure. This is where there is a clear beginning, middle and end. For example, the audience are introduced to the two characters at the beginning, just like the girl and the boy shown here. The event story builds in the middle and at the end there is closure. This is possibly one of the most simple structures due to it being easy to establish by the viewers and easy to link with the song that goes with the video. The story relates to the song and is a inspirational song where the lyrics relate to people not giving up to get where they want to be. At the beginning the viewers are introduced to the two different characters and the differences in their lives but also how similar they are. Throughout the video it shows the troubles they have to deal with and how the lyrics could possibly help them out in these cases and then finally how they overcome this in the end to create closure.

A theory that could relate to this video is that of Todorov. For example, the equilibrium sets the scene like the beginning of the narrative structure. It shows the two characters everyday lives. Secondly, disruption, this is noticed as a complication, something happens to the equilibrium. In this case it's that the two people feel inadequate to the people they're shown with in the video and struggle to fit in, and are mentally and physically abused in the video. The conflict/climax is when the problem is trying to be solved and resoluted. In this case it's that the people work harder and harder to achieve what they want to become and overcome the violence and the way they are treated by the people before. They use this hard work to show they are better than it and the problem is resolved because they become the 'winners' and the better people in the story. The new equilibrium is that normality is restored however, it's never the same, in this case it's that they overcome the struggles and become the better people/person and become more successful than the other people showing that the hard work is paying off.
